An increase in salaries for truck drivers isn’t a new trend. In Missouri, for instance, companies know that offering more money won’t be enough to enlist new employees, as most of them are hesitant to spend long hours on the road. That said, employers have modified trucking routes to shorter distances for less work and more time at home.

Trucking advocates are also working on a new regulation to allow those at least 18 years old to apply for an interstate truck driver job opening. The current age in most states is 21 years old. These efforts will be crucial to solving the need for 90,000 new drivers per annum in the next 10 years, according to the American Trucking Associations.

Driver Shortage

A shortage of truck drivers not only cause concern within the freight transportation industry, but also the manufacturing sector and even the Federal Reserve. Many have increased their rates to cover the demand for services, and customers such as those from the retail industry are forced to pass on the increase to consumers.

The looming shortage also stems from an aging driver population. Truck drivers who are above 34 years old comprise 80% of the workforce.

Trucking companies should consider a recruitment agency, especially if they have a small in-house human resources team. Even if you offer competitive compensation and shorter working hours, your recruitment efforts will be useless without a faster way of contacting potential candidates.
