Think You Know How to Sharpen Your Scissors?

Hair ShearsAs most hairdressers believe, properly sharpened hair scissors can make all the difference between getting a great haircut and a bad hair day in NZ. That’s why it’s essential to know how to properly sharpen your shears so that you can work on your craft as precisely as possible.

So, here are a few techniques that you can use to sharpen your trusted scissors.

Sandpaper technique

Using a piece of sandpaper is also possible when sharpening your tools. All you need is a piece of sandpaper and cut the scissors into it a few times. You may also turn the scissors over so that you’ll be able to sharpen the other side as well.

It’s advisable to check on the sharpness to ensure that it was a success. If you still feel that the blade isn’t as sharp as you want it to be, then try repeating the process.

Aluminium foil technique

Sharpening any blade with an aluminium foil is exactly the same as when you’re using sandpaper. You just have to cut through the aluminium foil repeatedly so that you can remove all the nicks that are on the blades.

You just have to ensure that the aluminium foil is folded over a few times and completely flattened before you use it to sharpen your scissors.

Using a sharpening stone

You can also get a sharpening stone at a hardware store. It usually comes with a coarse side and a fine side on the other. All you have to do is to soak it in machine oil overnight before you use it. Hold the sharp edge flat against the sharpening stone and repeatedly slide until you’ve removed all the nicks.

Keeping the sharpness of your scissors can be easy if you only know how to do it on your own. Always remember that a pair of scissors is every hair stylist’s main tool in doing their job. Keeping it as sharp as possible will ensure that they can comfortably do the techniques that they can.
