Indoors and Out: 3 Ways to Spend Winter in Chicago

Downtown Chicago & Lake MichiganChicago is a great place to explore in the winter—and there is an activity tailor-fit for everyone in the family. Whether it’s finding a winter activity for the kids, challenging your teenager’s daring skills or enjoying a dose of culture in Chicago, here are some great activities you should plan out in the winter.

Have snowtubing fun

When you’re having a vacation with your family, one of the great activities you can enjoy in the winter is snowtubing. The new craze that can usually be done in a ski lodge brings together a fun and safe time even for younger kids.

The reason for this is that you don’t have to know a particular set of abilities, unlike snowboarding and skiing. You simply need to ride a fabric-covered tube in the right winter attire, and enjoy the ride with your kids, reported Chicago Parent.

It’s a great way to have a ski-sloping fun without the risks of skiing. If you’re particularly uncoordinated or have a hard time keeping your balance on snowy slopes, then this is definitely for you.

Snowboarding

For a more intense experience, snowboarding is a great activity for those who prefer a more epic and challenging recreational activity in the snow. According to TripSavvy, there are ski lodges near Chicago that provide a lot of jumps, rollers, and rails to make your snowboarding experience extra challenging.

Beginners or those who want to learn the sport may want to find a lodge that offers lessons in snowboarding. This way, you can enjoy your trip and learn a new skill for the winter.

Enjoy culture in the cold

Chicago is not just a home for outdoor activities—there are also must-see places to spend time in winter. Several museums offer viewings for free or at least a fair price, while cultural centers, conservatories, and even a planetarium is a great way to break your activity-filled vacation. These educational locations will expand your cultural perspective, as per the Chicago Tribune.

The next time you visit Chicago with family, make sure to create an itinerary that includes everything that’s enjoyable to the little ones, the teenagers, and even the grown-ups—and take in all angles of Chicago worth exploring.

3 Needs Businesses Must Prioritize

business operations floor

business operations floorBusiness is a game of resources. Whoever can make the most in the least amount of resources tends to win the game. But really, the more important idea here is businesses that allocate resources smartly to the right aspects of the company are the ones that grow. Where should the resources go? It depends, but in most situation, these three:

Technology

Today’s businesses depend heavily on technology, which is why it makes sense to focus a sizeable chunk of your resources here. For instance, if you’re running an online store, not only do you need a well-designed e-commerce site. It would help your business if you have a mobile app. There might be a situation where you don’t have employees who can make this happen. If this is the case, CloudXtension noted that you might want to look at IT staff outsourcing services so you can keep up with competitors.

Marketing

There’s no use having a cutting-edge product if it doesn’t get to the hands of the right people. It’s important to have the right marketing strategy for a sufficient amount of time, so your core competencies could shine. This doesn’t mean you have to splurge on marketing, but at the very least, there should be a solid strategy behind what you do and how that reaches its intended market.

Manpower

At the end of the day, whatever service or product your business offers won’t be possible without the people working for you. As such, it’s highly important to devote adequate resources to them. Hire the right number of people for the jobs that need to be done. On top of that, keep them happy with good benefits and opportunities to go further in their careers. Treat your people well and they would treat your business well.

When your resource allocation is spot-on, there’s no way but up for your budding enterprise.

5 Tools Every Startup Barber Shop Should Have

Scene inside barber shop

Scene inside barber shopGone are the days when men were afraid to go to salons and spas because they had a macho image to protect. The 21st-century men now acknowledge their need to stay well-groomed and pampered, just like women. That is why the traditional barber shop has evolved into something more than just your regular trim and shave.
If you’re putting up your own shop, you must have the essential tools to cater to the needs of the modern men. Online shops, such as NJ Barber Supply, have a wide variety of tools that every barber shop should have.

Here’s a list of what you should buy:

Shears

You can’t be called a barber shop if you don’t have shears. Start with texturizing and thinning scissors. You should also buy small scissors for the detailed cut, as well as bigger, heavy-duty shears for the wider cut.

Clippers

Men’s haircut usually starts with these. Get a detachable clipper with multiple blade sizes to control the cut. Match it up with an adjustable trimmer for the tapered cut.

Shaving Tools

This service is specific to a barber shop, so you must do it right. Get a good straight razor, hot towels, and natural oils for pre-shaving. Your customers will appreciate the effort you’ll put into cleaning up their act, so to speak.

Hairdryers

This is a tool you shouldn’t go cheap on. Since you’ll be using a hairdryer more times in a day than a fashion model, you’ll want to get a high-quality dryer with multiple heat settings and a built-in heat damage protector.

Neck Dusters, Capes, and Brushes

Don’t let your customers leave with trimmings on their neck. Get enough capes and neck dusters for the capacity of your shop. When it comes to brushes, you’ll want to get different types because not all men have the same type of hair.

Remember that the service you offer is more than just giving a haircut. It’s also giving your customers time away from the daily grind to think of nothing else but to relax.

Common Types of Domestic Contracts

Couple reading a document

Couple reading a documentOne element that most couples do not consider is domestic contracts. This is an agreement between cohabiting partners or spouses regarding the boundaries of their relationship.

For the contracts to be legally binding, they should be in writing and signed in front of a witness. Getting a family law attorney in Boulder to advise you is the best way to protect your rights in the contract.

Here are some types of domestic contracts.

Cohabitation Agreements

For couples planning to cohabit for an extended period without legal marriage, a cohabitation agreement is prudent.

This agreement outlines the couple’s rights regarding property and support after termination of their relationship. Should a couple decide to marry later, the cohabitation agreement becomes a marriage contract.

Marriage Contracts

Typically known as prenuptial agreements, this contract includes the conditions of a separation or divorce should it happen. They define the terms of spousal support and property division after divorce.

The couple typically signs this contract before entering a marriage, though in other instances they sign in the course of a marriage. Some of these contracts include the religious, educational and moral training of children born during the marriage.

Separation Agreements

These domestic contracts are for after termination of a cohabitation relationship or marriage. It outlines the division of property and responsibilities of the partner after separation.

These also include the custody and rights of the parents for any children born during the relationship. Courts might, however, disregard the provision for child custody in these agreements if they are not in the child’s best interest.

There are some instances where the court might disregard domestic contracts. These include cases where one party failed to disclose assets at the time of the agreement or contracts signed under undue influence. If one partner did not comprehend the consequences of the contract at signing, the court might disregard it as well.

The Significant Jobs That a Majority of Retention Programs Overlook

A group of applicantsFor over a decade, prominent human resource tacticians have pursued a repetitive theme. They want their rock stars to work in job titles that mean most to the company. For instance, professors conducted a study revealing that a majority of businesses calculated less than 15% of occupations are what they refer to as tactical roles. Iconic Core Global and other industry experts further explain that this is the reason human resource management services should concentrate on uneven investments.

Based on these concepts, businesses must ensure that they employ and retain their top-quality employees. The job titles that generally receive plenty of attention at the majority of businesses are:

Crucial senior leaders.

This includes heads of logistics at a massive retailer, CEOs at consumer products offices, and the heads of design at luxury apparel businesses.

Connectors in the middle

Even though they were always overlooked, middle management roles have gradually become deemed as crucial to implementing the company’s tactic.

Future leaders with great potential

These employees are up-and-comers who are believed to occupy the top management roles of the company someday.

Although, the majority of companies provide little attention to keeping employees who fill three other positions. The ignored job titles are:

Indispensable specialists

These are roles in technology, R&D, and other positions crucial to the process efficiency, tactical direction, and product development of the firm.

Customer experience inventors

Employees in this position always communicate with the essential clients of a company and figure out how to retain them.

Crucial contractors.

These individuals are not actually employees, as they're a contingent staff who are important to the marketing, R&D, and other divisions of the company.

Not one of these roles is at the highest of the organizational chart, excluding a few of the client experience creators. As these roles aren’t tracked by the management, businesses generally ignore the significance of retaining high-performing individuals in them.

What Happens with Spousal Health Insurance After Divorce?

Health Insurance ApplicationYou can learn online how to get a divorce in Utah, and you could find a legal practice that can help you through the process. With all the procedures, documents, and tasks that need to be done in a divorce, Kelly & Bramwell, P.C. noted that you might forget the small details. Child custody and asset division may be important in a divorce, but the management of your health insurance coverage matters too.

Divorce Ends Health Insurance Too

In a divorce, you may think that you can continue to rely on a spousal health insurance coverage that you have through your spouse’s employer. Unfortunately, you lose that coverage once you finalize your divorce. Post-divorce, you will have to apply for coverage for yourself, and that can be quite a hassle if you fail to deal with it early in the divorce proceedings.

Option 1: Extend the Coverage

To extend your insurance coverage, you can appeal to a federal law called Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). Under this law, you can qualify for continued coverage through your spouse’s employer if the company has 20 or more employees. You can give the health plan administrator notice within 60 days post-divorce to avail of COBRA coverage.

Downsides of COBRA

Now, for some people, COBRA coverage can be expensive. Under it, you shoulder the entire premium because your spouse’s employer is not required to subsidize the costs. In fact, you may even be charged an extra 2% for administrative costs. At the same time, COBRA coverage only lasts for 36 months.

Option 2: Get Your Own Insurance

An alternative to COBRA coverage lies in the health insurance provided by your employer. You can look if the provision will only cost little or nothing. If it is, then you’re better off with your employer’s coverage plan. For self-employed individuals, private insurance can also be viable choices that have lesser costs with lengthier coverage than the COBRA option.

Your marriage may end soon, but your health insurance can still stay as long as you replace your current policy with a new one.

Improve Your Property’s Appeal

Big luxury, modern house at duskHaving a lovely home can make a person happy and content. It also adds value to your property, but no matter how beautiful your home, your lawn and the immediate area around your house is a factor in enhancing your kerb appeal. If you feel that your house could do with a few enhancements, you should use these ideas to improve its appearance.

Improve Your Kerb Appeal

If you have a driveway, you can improve the kerbing detail of your property in Auckland, New Zealand. You could also ask your landscape designer to add edging to your entrance path. Upgrade the kerbs near your house and repair chipped or damaged areas.

Your Lawn and Doorway

Your lawn and doorway are the first places that people see. If your doorway looks shabby, you could repaint it to make it look new. You could also replace the door knobs and locks to upgrade your security system.

You can place potted plants on your lawn, so your pathway or driveway could be more appealing. You could also place shrubbery and small trees to improve your lawn’s appearance. However, you need to make sure that you could manage the greenery so your home won’t be overrun with plants. If you have a larger area, hire a landscape designer to help plan out your lawn’s appearance.

Light It Up

If your home is dim at night, you can add light fixtures in some chosen areas to enhance your home’s appearance. Look for different outdoor lighting lamps to suit your home. You can choose a wall or ceiling lamp, or you could even buy a small lamp post for your home.

Designing your home is only one way to improve its appearance. But if you are on a tight budget, you can do these simple things to enhance its appeal without spending too much.

EPA Removes Alabama Site from Superfund National Priorities List

A polluted environmentThe Perdido Groundwater Contamination Site in Alabama no longer exists in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) list of the most polluted places in the US.

The EPA decided to remove the site from its Superfund National Priorities List, after announcing that there is no need for further clean-up efforts.

Crisis Management

Training for hazmat response in Utah formed part of broader contingency efforts by local law enforcement, EMS, and hospital systems. The drills aim to determine the capability of the state to handle risks from natural disasters or human-made hazards.

The mass-casualty training drill took place in Salt Lake City. Jason Nicholl of the South Salt Lake Fire Department said that the drill has been on the drawing board for at least six months. Aside from a hazmat situation, it took into account other factors such as a bombing situation or a shooting incident.

Chemical-Free

The site had been on the list since 1983 due to a chemical spill caused by a train accident, which led to groundwater contamination. The accident occurred in May 1965, when around 7,600 gallons of benzene leaked from one of the rail cars. It was only until 1981 that residents noticed a different taste and smell to their potable water, which explained the gap in declaring the site as a polluted area.

In the last five years, the EPA’s progress reports show that groundwater at the site contains benzene less than five micrograms per liter of water. This proved enough to remove the site from the Superfund list. Meanwhile, other states are preparing how to respond in the event of biohazard threats or natural disasters.

The public and private sectors in Alabama, Utah or any other state should have a clear understanding of the risks of a hazmat situation. What is your state’s contingency plan for a chemical spill?

Protecting Vulnerable Parts of Your Building

People walking around office buildingNo matter how updated your security system is, some areas are considered weak spots. They are potential entry and exit points for burglars, which means a commercial building should pay special attention to them.

Because there are so many things in the office that could be targeted by burglars, you should reinforce these areas:

Garage

The garage holds your company vehicles–and everything you’ve left inside the cars. Moreover, it can be a potential entry point into the main building. You need commercial garage door services from professionals in Salt Lake City like Price’s Guaranteed Doors to inspect it for any signs of problems, which burglars may exploit to gain entry. Here’s another reason to have the garage doors inspected regularly: when they are damaged, they might cause accidents, which may cost money and lives.

Doors

Companies usually position security cameras near entryways such as doors, but make sure you are positioning the cameras in the right direction. Check that the direction of the door opening will not hinder the camera’s view, as that defeats the purpose of the security tool in the first place. A person may hide behind a door, and your camera will not see their face, especially if it watches the door closely, not the area surrounding it.

Windows

Glass windows are sophisticated. They show a certain boldness because everyone knows that glass can be broken. Because of this, the glass you choose for your windows should be strong and can withstand a strong impact. This is for safety reasons as well, as glass shards may hurt people who happen to be nearby when they break. It would also be beneficial if you have window blinds in place, so people cannot easily look into your rooms. This is to prevent your building from being a target in the first place.

There are necessary precautions that improve the security of your commercial building. Each one of these is important, so don’t choose just one area to protect.
